OKC Rod Rush
NSRA Kicks Off Its New Season
Story and photos by Garry McWhirter
It only seems appropriate that the National Street Rod Association would begin its season of rodding events right in the middle of the United States. NSRA hosts 12 events throughout the country each year with their biggest event, The Street Rod Nationals, based in Louisville, Kentucky. Oklahoma City is located almost directly in the center of the continent. The first event on the NSRA schedule, The Southwest Street Rod Nationals, took place in early April at the Oklahoma State Expo Center. As the first big event of the rodding season, it serves as a great kickoff. Many rodders are eager to get back into the rodding scene after a long winter. The off-season of 2008-2009 was one that had its share of questions. The biggest question was what effect the economy would have on our beloved hobby. If the turnout for Oklahoma was any indication, we are in good shape.
Early Spring can bring all sorts of weather changes. After a rather windy setup day on Thursday, Friday dawned with cool temperatures and overcast skies. But the sun forced its way out and graced the Expo Center with a great afternoon. The rodders in this part of the country took it all in stride with a turnout of hearty and enthusiastic participants. There was a friendly atmosphere all around. The big day was of course Saturday and an even larger multitude gathered. Jackets were shed early and most of the participants enjoyed a wonderful day of looking, inspecting and scoping out the latest offerings of the rodding hobby.
